History

The Society has been in existence since 1860 when the first Flower Show was held on Monday 23rd September. W. B. Ferrand Esq. was the Secretary with Mr. T. A. Prior as Treasurer plus a committee of five gentlemen. At this first show it was decided to hold another the following year, and a comment was made that it could perhaps become a permanent thing, which indeed it has proved to be. From 1860 until 1983 the Society solely organized and staged the one event, the Annual Flower and Produce Show. However, in the early days it included events like horse and pony racing, sports, animals and poultry were also included in the show schedule. In 1983 under the Chairmanship of Mr. W. A. Partridge the committee of the Society extended its activities to include monthly meetings with guest speaker, outings, garden and other visits, social evenings, which have been extended over the years.
