Islip Village Shop News
Jane Barker from the Oxfordshire Rural Community Council presents the Commendation Award certificate for Community Shop of the Year, 2007.
As you all no doubt aware, from shopping and publicity in the papers, grocery prices are increasing all the time. I have to watch daily for increases and can no longer rely on memory when pricing goods! We are doing our best to keep our prices as low as possible, by buying in when on offer, taking advantage of multibuys and shopping around. Of course buying from us means you can buy just what you want, not pressurised to purchase 2 or 3 to save money. Sandwich prices stay the same and eggs remain at £1.25 for large and £1.15 for medium, extremely reasonable for local and free – range.
The latest product to be hit appears to be honey. Rowse’s are having to increase prices again, the second time since June, in September. This is due to increases in raw honey costs from
origin due to limited worldwide availability and heavy demand. Places affected are Argentina, USA, Europe, Brazil and China. Reasons are varied – weather, colony collapse disorder, quality and a ban on the UK and EC importing Brazilian honey. Our local honey prices are also due to increase in September. Mr Harris has increased his price once and regrets that it will have to rise by another 50p a jar on the 1st September. At the moment we sell at £3.00 a jar but this will have to rise to £3.60 as we have absorbed the first price increase. Many places sell the same product at £4.00 now, so our prices are not high.

We have 3 new types of cards, some are hand – made, on the Card Connection stand. This provides a much more varied range. A new stock of Nigel Lambert’s cards are also available. These include ones of local villages and most attractive Otmoor scenes.
A wide variety of new books in stock, including Jill Murphy’s, Miffy and Mr Men books. Many half price. Ideal for presents.
Please remember we are always interested to hear of different products you would like us to stock in order to meet your needs. Fresh fruit, salad items and vegetables are always a problem as they soon go off. So please order if you need these. They will be here in the afternoon if ordered that morning or in the morning if ordered the previous day. Rectory Farm deliver on a Friday.
Several people have commented on their disappointment that there is no café on a Thursday during the school holidays. Are there any people who might do it on
a rota basis for the next holiday? Not much is involved, making tea and coffee and putting a cake out, which could be easily bought at the shop. The shop pays for the hire of the Terrace Room. It would be so good to have this up and going again.
SHOP LOCAL – REDUCE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT AND CUT DOWN ON YOUR PETROL BILLS.
Thanks to all those who keep the shop open and to those who have recently come forward to offer their services. A special thank you to those who deliver to people not able to come to the shop. Remember we always need new volunteers! Maralynn Smith
